Kansas ABLE Savings Plan Update

Friday, July 29, 2016

The Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Savings Program passed the Kansas legislature in April 2015.

All ABLE Savings Programs are structured to provide a way for persons with disabilities to save money without impacting their Federal benefits.

The Kansas ABLE Savings Program joined a multi-state consortium in January 2016. This Consortium consists of Alaska, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. Other states may join.

The request for proposals (RFP) for the multi-state Consortium’s ABLE program was issued in June 2016 and proposals are due by August 1. Applications will be reviewed, a contract negotiated and awarded, and regulations will be written. As a member of the multi-state Consortium, the Kansas program hopes to be up and running by the end of 2016. Kansas citizens who are ready to explore the merits of an ABLE Savings Program have some other options right now. The states of Tennessee, Ohio, and Nebraska are enrolling beneficiaries from any U.S. state. Florida requires that a participant be a Florida resident at the time of application. The ABLE National Resource Center (ANRC) invites potential ABLE participants and others to attend a free webinar, A Closer Look at the New ABLE Programs, on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at 1:00 – 2:00 pm Central.
